I checked the size of the 10 plant comfrey bed and it's about 4m square. That might seem like a lot of space but comfrey plants are big and vigorous so need space. I would also add that the only way I could keep my small polytunnel going last year was to make the comfrey juice in a barrel. Each load took about 0.25-0.30 of the comfrey from the 10 plant bed. It regrew quickly so there could be continuous cropping. Maybe I was over feeding to tomatoes, who knows, but they did crop well even with the poor weather. The toms were in soil beds.

James, these are really hard questions to answer. I did some trials last year and got far more juice form the same quantity of material at different times of the year. There was also a difference in quantity of liquid produced when using just leaves or leaves and stems. Initially I had 10 plants which used a fair sized area which I will measure next time I'm at the garden. There are so many other variables like how often you feed, how you are growing the toms i.e. in post or in the ground etc etc. I guess my answer will be try it and see. Comfrey plants need space so grow as many as you can in the space you have. It will always be a compromise between giving space to Comfrey and using it for veg but it is a very useful plant to have as it has lots of uses.

I'm interested in growing comfrey fro use as liquid fertilizer. I have a small veg plot at home with say 5 tomato plants 3 courgette plants runner beans, spinach, peas etc.

I wonder if you could tell me how many comfrey plants I'll need to grow? How many comfrey plants are needed for each tomato plant to provide a whole years fertilizer?
