Cooperative allotments?

Another CSA model for the UK could be cooperative allotments. Instead of each allotment holder growing a lot of different crops they could set aside half their space to grow one or two crops to share with others. This would avoid duplication and produce a larger harvest. Crops would be rotated around plots and a spread over a few plots to avoid the possibility of total failure.

It seems odd that so many individuals duplicate time and effort to grow exactly the same things year after year. Even a little organisation could drastically increase the amount of food produced. A considerable barrier to cooperation would be the innate competition between plot holders to grow the biggest, earliest or best of each staple crop!
